Stickley Recliner - No. 369 from 1910

Manufacturer: Stickley
Model: 369

The Stickley Spindle Morris Chair is a simple mission style recliner featuring wide slats and arms that become horizontal at the front legs.

To make the bend in the arm, the end of a single straight board was cut at an angle then reglued (laminated) on the bottom of the board, forming the angle you see.  Since both pieces are from the same part of the same board, the color and grain match well making this method difficult to identify without close inpection.  This saves on wood waste that would occur if the arm were a solid piece.

This model is still in production today and available from Stickley in two cushion styles of Oak and Cherry.

This is the only reclining chair from the 1910 stickley catalog that still appears to be in production.  Although the model number is the same, the current model has thin side slats instead of the thick ones shown in the 1910 edition.

Gustav Stickley's recliner plans from 1906 can be adapted to build this chair.
